Hi-Tek vs. Lo-Fi

So anyone who has been speaking with me recently may or may not have picked up on my (very) minor obsession with lo-fi. I guess this spawned from a recent Skype conversation with James where he suggested that, and I quote "anyone who uses MSN is too lo-fi for me"

Very shortly after this conversation took place I learned that Led Zepplin in fact invented 'Lo-Fi' using cunning methods to give their albums a raw, and almost live sound on their LPs. Hmmm. NATURALLY this brought me to thinking... Does my day to day routine rely on mainly lo-fi, or hi-tek items to ... how do you say... SURVIVE in this crazy world? Time to take inventory. Mind you. I'm stuck in the middle of the 'outback' which is as Lo-Fi as it gets.

Lets see:

Blackberry.. Where it all started.
Well, upon first appearance one would only assume it to be quite hi-tek... but no Skype???
Also, I have been out of any sort of cell phone coverage for over a month, so this item is been reduced to nothing more than an alarm clock

Verdict: Lo-Fi

Led Zepplin invented Lo-Fi

Verdict: Hi-Tech

These fucking gates are the bane of my existance! Stop, wait for dust to clear, get out, open gate, get in, drive 20ft, get out, close gate, get back in, drive away.

Verdict: Lo-Fi

This is a spin on things though. Field assistants... or even any co-pilot in the Landcruiser.

Field assistants?

Verdict: Hi-Tek

Ipods used to be Hi-Tek... but that was years ago. I'd have to say Lo-Fi.....
Although, I am still pretty stoked on my case

Verdict: Hi-Tek

Quilted plaid shirt + Hoodie combo. I want to say Lo-Fi, but its just so classic.

Verdict: Hi-Tek

Analog thermometers are so dope. Who ever came up with the whole mercury thing anyways? And when they figured out that shit was bad they replaced it with some fancy red liquid? I'd love to say Lo-Fi, but I actually drilled that hole in the top with a cordless drill.

Verdict: Hi-Tek

No smoking sign? Honestly... Who doesn't know this by now?

Verdict: Lo-Fi

Box of wine. Well it holds a lot of wine, and says "NEW", and I am definitely drinking from it as I add to my Hi-Tek blog.

Verdict: Hi-Tek

So thats it. Hi-Tek 6 / Lo-Fi 3
I guess life in the bush is more high tech than I realised.....

  1. I would say that box wine is low-fi, though I would otherwise agree with your assessments. And the flannel/hoodie combo? Totally hi-tek masquerading as low-fi.
